WiZink, a branchless bank with over €3 billion in credit card loans, acquired Aplazame to complement its consumer credit portfolio. The transaction was 100% cash-based, reaffirming Hi Ventures' ability to create value in the new wave of Fintech.
Founded in 2014, Aplazame offers a unique payment alternative for e-commerce customers by providing loans directly at the point of sale, based on a proprietary platform and risk analysis algorithm. Retailers use it as a marketing tool to boost sales. Hi Ventures led the company's seed round in 2016, betting on Aplazame’s early traction in Spain and its potential in Latin America. Aplazame issued its first loan in Mexico two years later.
Aplazame will continue operating as an independent company with founder and CEO Fernando Cabello-Astolfi leading the same team that grew the company from the ground up.
According to Iñaki Perkins, General Manager of WiZink: "Aplazame's proposition perfectly aligns with our digital profile and philosophy of simplicity, making the customer's daily life easier. Although WiZink and Aplazame will remain independent companies, this acquisition marks another step toward becoming a leader in flexible payment solutions and strengthens our digital strategy by entering the e-commerce space."
Federico Antoni, Managing Partner of Hi Ventures, commented on the significance of the transaction: "As Fintech investors, we seek out unique technologies that create exceptional value in financial services. WiZink recognized the value of bringing in Fernando Cabello's technical expertise and his team. This transaction confirms Hi Ventures' thesis on the Fintech opportunity in Latin America."
